The Annandale seems the perfect ride for Thirsty Merc, a band just getting back in the saddle, says Ange Dalby.

Ok, so it’s been along time between drinks for me and the Annandale but let me tell you not a lot has changed.

"...nothing like a packed room an ink stamp on your wrist to find your roots..."

Maybe the fact that I have two kids and live in the burbs is a change and the fact that the graffiti behind the loo doors made me look twice ... but if you want to see the best of Australian live music there is nothing like a packed room devoid of glitz and glamour and an ink stamp on your wrist to find your roots.

Friday night was just such a night. Finally after a year off the touring circuit the Merc are back, and nobody could say they where disappointed. In true Merc style the boys came up with the goods, a tight cohesive set mixed with old favourites and a taste of the new from the much awaited second album, Slideshows.

Rai Thistlethwaites cerebral incantations and intriguing persona where underpinned by the rock guitar of Sean Carey and the wild, wild bass of Phil Stack. Yet it is a real thrill to see the likes of Karl Robertson “beat the wood”. He is the most unassuming rock drummer in history, modest and reserved - but wow, he can play LOUD.

How cool it must be for a band to have their songs sung at them from an appreciative crowd to see sold out on the window of the local live rock Mecca to play to a room full of die hard fans, yet that is what happens when the Merc are in town.

The new single 20 Good Reasons has already been picked up by a local T.V station as a backing track for a programme promo. You know what though; I will give you just Two Good Reasons to check out Thirsty Merc 1. They are Australian and 2. They ROCK!!!!!
